Sorrow and bliss reviews5/27/2023 The idea that you might be ordinary is unbearable.” But that's harder for you, isn't it? You'd rather be one or the other. "You're not the best person in the world either, which is what you really think. "No, you're not." Patrick's hand came down in a fist and he hit the arm of the sofa. If she sounds like a terrible person, it is because she can be, but that is what makes Martha such a relatable character as none of us are perfect. The story is told in Martha’s voice which is quite honest as she remembers spells of depression where she couldn’t get out of bed and times of anger when she has lashed out at Patrick for no real reason. From here the story goes back to how the couple first met as teenagers and follows them through Martha’s first marriage, to their own, and tracks the many fights that have happened on the way. She marks the occasion by having a fight with Patrick who packs his bags and finally decides to leave her. The story follows Martha, who is coming home from a surprise 40th birthday party thrown by her husband Patrick. Sorrow and Bliss lives up to the title with a book that is equal parts funny and, quite bluntly, sad.
